With this project, we want to help young newcomers who speak a foreign language to find student jobs in order to reduce the existing gap between migrant youth and the labor market.
In other words, we want to create a bridge between foreign-language citizens and the regular labor market. There are many advantages for young people to take up a student job. These students are stronger than their peers once they enter the regular labor market. The benefits for non-native speakers and young migrants with a student job are even more numerous. For example, non-native young people get the chance to practice the Dutch language extra in a work environment. They expand their vocabulary with professional jargon they would not otherwise learn. They develop relevant work attitudes and expand their social network. Once graduated, the accumulated work experience will give them a leg up when applying for jobs in the labor market. |
Why this project?
|
Origin of the project |
By focusing on student jobs for non-native newcomers, we want to reduce the existing gap between young people with a migration background and the labor market.
Work experience generally has a positive effect on the integration of young people. A student job increases the personal self-confidence of the young people, broadens their social network and trains desirable work attitudes. |
The idea for this project came from the migrant youth themselves. They raised the alarm at OKAN (Welcoming Education for Newcomers Speakers of Other Languages). So it were the young people themselves who put this theme on OKAN's agenda, because they strongly want to work but cannot find a student job. OKAN asked the researchers of Thomas More for help to look into this with them. This is how the idea of this project was born.
